Alchemy Of Bass 1 by Basstard79 Alchemy Of Bass 1 by Basstard79
Absolutely, totally, stunningly, mind-blowingly, jaw-droppingly, mouth-wateringly BEAUTIFUL.

And the sound's even better.

Yes, it's an Alembic Orion 5. Mahogany body with a figured walnut top, set-in 5 piece maple neck with walnut pinstripes, thick slab of ebony serving as a fingerboard... Plus 24 immaculately installed frets, perfectly functioning hardware and phenomenal Alembic active electronics.

No, it's not mine...

But I'll get an Alembic. Soon.

Time to make dreams come true.

Never liked the Alembic tone.... seriously well made though. Spend some time on talkbass.com and see some of the amazing exotic woods some maniacs use

What have you heard or played? If you associate Alembics only with Stanley Clarke and Mark King - well, I don't like their tone either, even though they are both phenomenal bassists (especially Stan the Man). But have you heard e.g. John Entwistle playing his custom Alembic? Some really angry rock sound! :D As for the Orion - it got big compliments on its sound from lots of people! With both pick-ups on, it sounds like a noble Jazz Bass that spent some time in a gym ;-) It's much more classic-sounding than my Nexus. Big round lows but not too boomy, clear trebles but not too clanky, if you know what I mean. I just love it :-)

As for talkbass - thanks, I don't have the time for that... I know I'd get addicted and I'd lose my job very quickly

Thanks for your comment!

I have to say, when I think Alembic I think Stanley Clarke, Mark King, Armand Sabal-Lecco.... a really throaty, nasal, gnarly kinda sound that I can't stand :D
I'm not a big fan of Entwistle's tone for the same reasons.
If it does other tones well, then I think there are better basses for that kind of thing :D

What kind of thing?...

Anyway, I got some phenomenal rock sounds from the Orion, it sat in the mix beautifully. Too bad I had to give it back to its owner :-( But hey, there might be some interesting news soon ;-) Apart from that, I'll be recording my band's album with borrowed Alembics - an Essence 5 and an Epic 4. The only non-Alembic bass used there will be my Malinek fretless - but it has Alembic strings now :D And did you know Flea used an Alembic Epic for most of RHCP's One Hot Minute?

I've heard about Armand Sabal-Lecco but never heard him play. Will have to check out.

It's so hard to describe tone in words :D

It's just a matter of personal preference. Good luck with your recording :)

(I've never liked any of Flea's tones, either)

I've just finished recording bass lines for my band's debut album. I used borrowed Alembic Essence 5 and Epic 4 basses (as well as my own Malinek fretless 5). Got BIG compliments on the sound from the sound engineer and the studio's owner :D

Fortunately not. Some engineers are not closed-minded ultraconservatists and actually listen to sounds instead of just looking for brand names they are familiar with. And we recorded in one of the best studios in Poland. :D

Can you believe it's one of the cheapest Alembic models? But talking about a "budget" Alembic is like talking about a "budget" Aston Martin :D

It is the holy grail of bass. Trust me on that.

wow... i'm impressed! maybe i need to visit Alembic website to see those "buget" (or "royal"?) models...

Everything Alembic makes is royal.

Click here: [link] and follow the Products link if you want to see their line of "basic" basses and guitars. The "budget" models are the Excel, the Epic (I think it's the least beutiful Alembic model, but I'll love even that one - I've played two of them, I have no questions ;-)) and the Orion. But... can you really call an over $4500 bass a budget instrument?... (2nd hand Alembics cost much less... and that's what I'll get)

But if you want to see their real possibilities... browse through the custom gallery (previous Customs of the Month). You'll drop your jaw. Or visit their Club (the link's on the main page of their website) and browse Showcase and Factory to Customer sections. Just... unbelievable.

One more thing: do you know why Alembic basses aren't popular among famous musicians anymore (they used to be in the 70s and the 80s)? There's just one reason: the company doesn't offer endorsement deals :P But I'll rather pay heavy cash for an Alembic than get a very good Fender or Music Man or Ibanez for free. Don't get me wrong - Fenders and Music Man basses and upper-range Ibanezes are all very good and I wouldn't mind having any of them but... I love Alembics so much more! I just can't help it ;-)

wow, thank you so much. it is very very interesting information! i'm so impressed! i understand you - their basses are so... smart and cool! Fenders and Music Man basses are great, but they are usual. Alembic has its own style! hehe, maybe i'll get a great luck to hold one of those guitars in my hands one day... But know i'm going to bed to see my bass-dreams. Good luck for you for next week, my friend. All the best, all the bass! ;)

Yamahas are rather good, I had one (an active BBG5S 5-string) and I liked it. I don't have much to say about Peaveys - not too much experience with them but they seem to be well made.

Me, I have a Nexus Shining 5 [link] [link] [link] a Malinek Fretless 5 [link] [link] (both of them made by Polish luthiers) and an Aria ProII Rev-Sound Bass [link] [link] [link] (probably '79). All 3 are very good, I've already recorded with all of them but... they're no match to the Alembic. Damn I want one.
